I would like to acknowledge the wisdom of all the country people of the past who have been responsible for the existence of weather lore... and especially that of the farmers and gardners, the shepherds and the ploughmen and the women they were married to, known as the Old Wives. 

இதற்கு மேல் இந்த நான்கு நூல்களுக்குமே என்னால் பழைய மக்களுக்கு கடப்பாடு கூறிவிட முடியாது. அவை பிழையாகப் போகக் கூடும். அது முக்கியமில்லை. ஆனால் தங்கள் காலங்களில் கருத்தூன்றிச் சில விஷயங்களைப் பதிந்து வைத்தார்களே, அவை அபிப்ராயமோ, சரியான தரவுகளோ. அந்த அறிவின்பாற்பட்ட அக்கறையும், முயற்சியும் என்றும் நம் நன்றியை வேட்பன. 

தட்ப வெட்பம இருந்தே தீரும். கூடுதலோ குறைச்சலோ.

வெயில் வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு சாரார் விரும்பினால், மழை வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு சாரார் விரும்புவர். எல்லாருக்கும் ஒவ்விய தட்ப வெட்பம் எங்குமே ஆகாது.

Are both at church again
One to pray for sunshine
One to pray for rain. 

காற்றைப் பற்றிச் சில சொலவடைகள் -- 

If a gusty wind blows the trees about so the undersides of the leaves are revealed, it is a sign of rain. 

இலைகளைப் புரட்டிக் காட்டுவது போல் பெருங்காற்று அடித்தால் மழை வரும். 

If dry leaves swirl round on the path, or in a yard, it is certain that rain is about. 

நடுச்சாலையில், குறட்டில் இலை தட்டாமாலை ஆடினால் தட்டாமல் மழை வரும். 

சாவித் துவாரத்தில் காற்று சீழ்கை அடித்தால் மழை வரும் -- இது நம் நாட்டில் எவ்வளவு பொருந்தும் தெரியவில்லை. கிராமங்களில் சில அறிகுறிகள் மழை வருவதற்கு -- 

Ducks and geese are unusually noisy. 

The pigs are uneasy. 

Spiders crawl about on the walls of the house. 

Ditches and drains smell. 

Old wounds ache. 

ஒரு பாட்டி இடி வரும் என்று எப்படிக் கண்டுபிடிப்பாளாம் -- வயத்தைக் கலக்கறது என்னமோ. நிச்சயம் இடி வரும். நாமே, மனிதர்களே ஒரு விதத்தில் தட்ப வெட்ப அறிகுறிகளாகச் செயல்படுகிறோமாம். மழை வரும் எப்பொழுது நமது -- 

bones and joints ache 

scalps itch 

noses irritate 

scars and old wounds ache 

ears drum 

noises develop in the head 

மிருகங்கள் கேட்கவே வேண்டாம் 

sheep bleat persistently 

cats will wash themselves more carefully, bringing their paws right over ears and noses. 

மழை காலத்தில் சிலந்தி கூட்டைச் சரி செய்தால் நிச்சயம் மழை நின்று வெயில் அடிக்கத் தொடங்கும் என்று பொருள். பறவைகள், பூச்சிகள் எல்லாம் அறிகுறிகள் காட்டுகின்றன. அதாவது உலகமெங்கும் தகவல், முன்கூட்டிய ஜோதிடக் கணிப்புகள் எல்லா உயிரினங்களும் பரிமாறியவண்ணம் இருக்கின்றன. பாழாய்ப் போன மனித இனம் மட்டும் வெட்டி வேலைகளில் காலத்தை வீணடிக்கிறது. ஒன்றுமில்லை வெங்காயம் என்கிறோம். அந்த வெங்காயம் கூட என்ன தகவல் களஞ்சியம் தெரியுமா? 

Onion skins very thin
Mild winter coming in
Onion skins thick and tough
Coming winter cold and rough. 

அருமையான ஒரு வெதர் பாரோமீட்டர் பற்றி மேவிஸ் பட் கூறுகிறார் -- பாட்டிக்கை பாரோமீட்டர். Seaweed ஒன்றைக் கட்டித் தொங்க விட்டால் -- மழை வரும் என்றால் தோய்ந்து துவண்டு போகும். நல்ல க்ளைமேட் என்றால் காய்ந்து சருகாகும்.
